Well, it's happened again. I ran out of room on the Gangi Family
Website. So all the photos from the 1930s through the 1970s will be on this new Gangi History Website.
Let's do something different this time. Let'a start this site with a little family history. Anyone who is a
member of this family is in some way related to Liborio and Josephine Gangi (photo above). Liborio Gangi arrived
at Ellis Island, New York on November 8, 1912 on the ship named Canada from the port of Palermo, Sicily, Italy. Liborio grew
up in the small hilltop village of Giuliana. He arrived when he was 17 years old with his brother Vincenzo, who the family
called Uncle Jimmy. Vincenzo was 22 years old when he arrived. The customs agent wrote the last name for Liborio as
"Gangi" with the letter "G." For his brother Vincenzo the customs wrote the name Ganci with the letter "C."
As the story goes Grandpa Liborio was afraid they would send him back to Italy if he made a fuss so he kept quiet
and kept the name Gangi. You can check this fact by going to the links page and looking
at the Ellis Island manifest. Liborio is on line 27, while Vincenzo is on line 28. There were three brothers.
They left one brother behind in Giuliana named Rosario.
Liborio settled in Brooklyn, went
to night school to learn English, worked in garment factory, and eventually met and married Josephine Socco.
Josephine was orginally from the town next to Giuliana and arrived here with her parents
when she was a child. Josephine had two sisters, Lillian and Eva. Liborio and Josephine had four children, Russell,
Philip, Vincent and Virginia. In the photo below are their sons with their wives in a photo from
the early 1950s.
Vincenzo married Antoinette Tommasina and had a son named Russell.
Antoinette died very young, only a few years after they were married. Vincenzo remarried another
woman named Antoinette and gave birth to a daughter named Virginia.
Vincenzo's first son Russell still lives with his wife Ida in Melville, Long Island.
From right to left is Phil Gangi with his wife Dorothy, Russell Gangi with
Frances and Vincent Gangi with Nina. Liborio and Josephine's daughter Virginia is missing from
the photo above, but she can be seen in other places on this site. So thanks for your support over the years. I hope you all like the new site.
